Apply Now to Contribute to GOOD Ideas for New Orleans!

GOOD Ideas for New Orleans is two-month collaboration between creatives, experts and citizens to effect real change in New Orleans. Over the past year, New Orleanians have shared their ideas about how to make the city a better place on Neighborland. Now we want you to help translate those ideas into action.

As a collaborator, you'll be paired with a community leader that advocates for the changes New Orleanians support. You're work will help them make positive change happen faster. The project can by anything that brings the ideas a step closer to reality--a print design, public art, a physical installation or pop-up event, or a simple web tool. Neighborland will provide $500 to bring each project to life.

On May 12th, we'll host a kick-off meeting to pair collaborators with community leaders.  It will be a fun way to meet some of the brightest people in town, and agree on how to work together over the next two months.

On Thursday, July 12th, your team will present your work to an audience of citizens, creatives, and civic leaders, at an event hosted by GOOD Ideas for Cities. Your work will be featured nationally through GOOD and Neighborland.

Register here by Thursday, May 10th and you'll get information about when and where the kickoff event will take place. If you can't make it to the May 12th kickoff event, you can still participate, just sign up and we'll keep you posted on how to stay involved!

We're going to focus the creative energy of New Orleanians on four challenges:

1. Making bike transportation easier and safer.
2. Bringing more food trucks to New Orleans.
3. Beautifying intersections to improve safety and foster neighborhood pride.
4. Educating people about growing, buying, and cooking healthy local foods.

To Register:

I.) Register for an account in order to view the "Submit to GOOD" form.

II.)  In the Title field, just write your name

III.) In the Cover Letter field, just tell us a bit about yourself. Feel free to include links to your work or life.

IV.) In the Submission Content field, tell us which challenge(s) you're interested in.

Questions? That's ok! Go ahead and submit your application, even if you are not quite sure this is for you. Here is some additional information we are often asked for:

- You must be in or come to the New Orleans metropolitan area to participate
- At the kickoff meeting May 12, you'll receive more information about your Challenge and the Leaders will help each group of collaborators get started.
- As a group of collaborators, you'll decide on your working schedule and how often you'll meet up and discuss up until your installation, event, or exhibition.

Project: Doodle What it Means to be an Active Citizen

the OBJECTIVE

It is more important now than ever to be involved in our community and local politics. Active citizenship is one way that we can all contribute to society and make our communities better. However, in order to be an active citizen, we need to know what it means to be an active citizen. Express what you think it means to be an active citizen and inspire others to become one.

the ASSIGNMENT

Create a doodle of what you think it means to be an active citizen.

Need some ideas? Here are some steps to become an active citizen:

Look up your local representatives and know how to contact them. Your city or town’s website can be a great resource.

Attend a local council meeting. They have them for the environments, arts, parks and recreation, etc. Pick one that interests you!

Invite a City Council Member to speak at your next meeting. Looking for a speaker for your next meeting? Why not invite a city council member? Your group will learn about what is happening in the community and the council member will have the chance to connect with community members.

Volunteer! There are plenty of ways to volunteer in your community. Find a cause that you’re passionate about and research how you can use that passion to improve your community.

the REQUIREMENTS

Submit your entry here. We will accept submissions through Wednesday, February 15. Check back on to see the slideshow and vote on your favorite. The winner will receive a GOOD t-shirt and year's subscription to the magazine.

Project: Teach Us a Lesson

the OBJECTIVE
Give a lesson, get a lesson! Keep your ears open. The next time someone compliments your guitar-playing, parallel-parking, or, hey, income tax filing ask if they’d like to learn. Maybe they’ll have a lesson to swap. For this project, create a step-by-step illustration for your friends here at GOOD and we may share it on the site! You'll be able to check back in and learn from the other lessons we've received.

the ASSIGNMENT
Pick one of your favorite skills and draw us a step-by-step illustration so that we can learn it, too.

the REQUIREMENTS
Upload a jpg file of your illustration (at least 300dpi) here. We’ll accept submissions through March 21. Several illustrations will be shared on GOOD.is and one winner will receive a GOOD t-shirt and year's subscription to the magazine.
